The Edgecombe Performance Series kicks off Saturday, Sept. 21 in the Keihin Auditorium on the Tarboro campus of 麻豆视频在线观看, and a monumental show is already garnering some attention.

鈥淲e are excited to serve the community through the 18th season, and we will be bringing a variety of shows,鈥� says Dr. Doneva Chavis, cultural arts director for ECC. 鈥淭he highlight is 鈥榃ho鈥檚 Bad Michael Jackson Tribute Artist.鈥� Last year鈥檚, 鈥楨lvis is in the Building鈥� was almost a sell-out, so you may want to purchase your tickets soon.鈥�

鈥淲ho鈥檚 Bad鈥� was founded in 2003 as a tribute to Michael Jackson鈥檚 musical legacy. Now, as an umbrella organization, Who鈥檚 Bad Music boasts a stable of high-energy tribute shows.

The season kicks off with a fan-favorite. 鈥淪omewhere Between鈥� returns for a third year on Saturday, Sept. 21 at 7 p.m. Tracy Farmer, W.C. Allen, Dennis Winstead, Brad Batchelor and Scott Hartness will bring their unique bluegrass sound to the Keihin Auditorium. Tickets are $20 for adults and $10 for students.

Chavis says an all-day event on Friday, Nov. 8 will feature the dance, music, art and history of the Haliwa-Saponi Tribe as a part of Native American Heritage Month. This free event is open to the public.

Other performances for the 18th season include 鈥淔rosty鈥� on Friday, Nov. 15 at 5:45p.m. A young orphan named Billy discovers magic in a stolen hat. When he places the hat on a snowman鈥檚 head, the snowman comes to life! But, can Frosty the Snowman help Billy find his real family in time for Christmas? There will be a special performance for Edgecombe County Public Schools at 10:45 a.m. Tickets are $20 for adults and $10 for students.

鈥淣orth Carolina Symphony Holiday Pops鈥� is an all-time traditional favorite for the Tarboro area, offering the climax for the holiday season. The event will be held Wednesday, Dec. 11 at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are $25 for adults and $15 for students.

On Saturday, Feb. 8 at 5 p.m., attendees can enjoy the spirit-filled and powerful influence of gospel music with 鈥淏lack History through Gospel Music and Theater.鈥� Understand the evolution of African American culture and music and music in America, while noting the contributions of African Americans and historical milestones. Tickets are $15 for adults and $10 for students.

New York Theatre Ballet will perform signature works by master choreographers for the public on Thursday, March 13 at 7 p.m. Admission is free to the public, but tickets are still required.

The New York Theatre Ballet performs at 麻豆视频在线观看 on November 2 in its tenth appearance in the Edgecombe Performance Series.

The New York Theatre Ballet (NYTB) will come to 麻豆视频在线观看 on Thursday, November 2, to perform a series of ballets by legendary choreographers.

This is the tenth year that NYTB has participated in ECC鈥檚 Edgecombe Performance Series, which is currently in its seventeenth season.

The performance will begin at 7 p.m. in Keihin Auditorium, located in the Fleming Building on the Tarboro campus. Tickets are $25 for adults and $15 for children.

Under the direction of NYTB Artistic Director Steven Melendez, NYTB will perform the works of David Gordon, Amanda Treiber, Richard Holden, and Merce Cunningham. Also, NYTB will offer Between the Acts, a community engagement program where Melendez spends time between the pieces giving context for each ballet.

In addition, 狈驰罢叠鈥檚 Once Upon a Ballet series will present The Firebird and Scramble at 11 a.m. on Friday, November 3, for elementary students in Edgecombe County.

鈥淚 am honored to come to Tarboro to perform for the community,鈥� says Steven Melendez. 鈥淔or many people, especially in rural areas, dance can be seen as culturally inaccessible. I strive to break through those stereotypes and show my audience that they can be represented through ballet. Dance is for everybody, and it is not enough to believe that. My company wants to make it happen.鈥�

狈驰罢叠鈥檚 Legends and Visionaries will introduce audiences to a diverse range of ballets starting with The Firebird by Richard Holden. Originally created in 1910 by Michel Fokine, The Firebird is a mesh of several Russian fairy tales that create a captivating narrative for audiences.

The Firebird features music composed by Igor Stravinsky, with costume design by Sylvia Taalsohn Nolan. The tree that is part of the ballet was designed and constructed by Keith Michael.

The performance will also feature A Plain Romance Explained / Keith鈥檚 Solo, with choreography and text by David Gordon and staged by Karen Graham. This ballet received its world premiere in 1984 in New York City, featuring performers who speak while dancing and challenging the conventions of traditional ballet. A Plain Romance Explained / Keith鈥檚 Solo is performed with permission from the Pick Up Performance Company.

Legends and Visionaries will also feature Amanda Treiber鈥檚 Sideslip. Created in 2022, this contemporary piece features a collaboration between choreographers and artists. Sideslip includes interactions between performers and artwork, showcasing a dynamic relationship between dance and art as mediums of creativity.

The art featured in Sideslip is created by Marcy Rosenblat, with the musical pieces 鈥淐horale,鈥� 鈥淚mage De Moreau,鈥� and 鈥淒euxi猫me Chorale鈥� created by Louis Andriessen. The recording artist for the ballet is Ralph van Raat.

狈驰罢叠鈥檚 Legends and Visionaries will round off the performance with Scramble, choreographed by the late Merce Cunningham. Scramble was first performed at the Ravinia Festival in Chicago, Illinois, in July 1967, and quickly became an iconic piece in modern ballet. Scramble was a unique work for its time because it comprised eighteen sections, which could be done in different orders or have omissions of sections.

The music for Scramble is called 鈥淎ctivities for Orchestra鈥� by Toshi Ichiyanagi. Costumes are reconstructed by Carmella Lauer, after the design by Frank Stella. Scramble is staged by Jennifer Goggans with lighting by Beverly Emmons.

Making its ninth appearance in the Edgecombe Performance Series, the New York Theatre Ballet performs at 麻豆视频在线观看 on October 6.

In its first return to Tarboro since 2019, New York Theatre Ballet (NYTB) will perform signature works by master choreographers on Thursday, October 6, at 麻豆视频在线观看.

This year marks the ninth year that NYTB has performed in ECC鈥檚 Edgecombe Performance Series. This event marks the first performance in the 2022-2023 series.

The October 6 performance begins at 7 p.m. in Keihin Auditorium in the Fleming Building on the Tarboro campus. The event is free, but tickets are required.

Under the artistic direction of Steven Melendez, NYTB will perform the works of Agnes de Mille, Antony Tudor, Martha Clarke, and James Whiteside. As part of a new initiative, NYTB will offer Between the Acts, a community engagement program, during intermissions.

In addition, the company鈥檚 acclaimed Once Upon a Ballet series will present The Alice-in-Wonderland Follies at 10:30 a.m. on Friday, October 7, for Edgecombe elementary school students.

鈥淣ew York Theatre Ballet has been making our annual trip to Tarboro, North Carolina, into the 麻豆视频在线观看 theater for nearly a decade,鈥� says NYTB Artistic Director Steven Melendez. 鈥淩eturning this year feels like going home. On October 6, 狈驰罢叠鈥檚 Legends & Visionaries introduces audiences to a range of choreographic styles beginning with a suite of dances created by Agnes de Mille for the 1945 Broadway classic Carousel. Credited with transforming Broadway musicals in the 1940s and 鈥�50s by blending both classical and modern dance, de Mille brought her signature style and use of gesture to this legendary Rodgers and Hammerstein musical.

Staged for NYTB by Gemze de Lappe with costumes by Sylvia Taalsohn Nolan, Carousel is a 鈥渄on鈥檛 miss鈥� event. The suite of dances from Carousel entered the repertory of NYTB in 2007.

The program will also feature Antony Tudor鈥檚 masterful Dark Elegies, an eloquent, somber ballet set to Gustav Mahler鈥檚 song cycle 鈥淜indertotenlieder鈥� (鈥淪ongs on the Death of Children鈥�), with costumes by Raymond Sovey, after Nadia Benois.

Dark Elegies, considered Tudor鈥檚 finest work, expresses the raw emotion of a tight-knit community faced with the inexplicable loss of their beloved children. The ballet was given its world premiere in 1937 by Ballet Rambert in London and entered 狈驰罢叠鈥檚 repertory in 2013. Dark Elegies is staged for NYTB by Amanda McKerrow and John Gardner.

狈驰罢叠鈥檚 Legends & Visionaries program will round out with two contemporary works, The Garden of Villandry, choreographed by Robert Barnett, Felix Blaska, and Martha Clarke, and Mamborama by James Whiteside, principal dancer with American Ballet Theatre.

The Garden of Villandry, a Victorian pas de trois, is set to Franz Schubert鈥檚 Piano Trio No. 1 in B flat, with costumes by Jane Greenwood. The ballet will be staged for NYTB by Clarke.

Whiteside鈥檚 joyful Mamborama, premiered by NYTB last spring, is set to Tito Puente鈥檚 Mambo Gallego and features costume design by Eric Winterling. Speaking of his inspiration for Mamborama, Whiteside says, 鈥淭ito Puente鈥檚 music sparks so much joy and nostalgia in me. I鈥檝e wanted to make dances to it since I was a teenager.鈥�

New York Theatre Ballet鈥檚 Once Upon a Ballet series presents The Alice-in-Wonderland Follies on Friday, October 7, at 10:30 a.m., for Edgecombe elementary school students. Follow Alice鈥檚 adventures through Wonderland as she meets some of the most beloved characters in children鈥檚 literature. Presented in a vaudeville setting, this eclectic one-hour ballet draws on many different dance forms 鈥� from Irish step dancing to African dance and classical ballet 鈥� all of which combine to make a highly entertaining show.

Choreographed by Keith Michael, The Alice-in-Wonderland Follies features sets by Gillian Bradshaw and costumes by Sylvia Taalsohn Nolan.

Based in Brevard, NC, the band鈥檚 roots run deep in the tradition of Bill Monroe. Carolina Blue was formed in 2007, following the release of the album 鈥淣othing So Blue鈥� by guitarist Bobby Powell and mandolinist Tim Jones.

Carolina Blue also features Reese Combs on bass, James McDowell on banjo, and Aynsley Porchak on fiddle. All five musicians sing, creating a strong, unique vocal blend. The band’s repertoire consists of original songs, many bluegrass favorites, and some gospel, all done in the traditional style.

The group won the South Carolina state bluegrass championship at RenoFest in 2011. They also received their first Vocal Group of the Year nomination at the 2018 Society for the Preservation of Bluegrass Music of America awards show. Most recently, Carolina Blue was a 2019 International Bluegrass Music Association award nominee.

The Civil War had been raging for two years when young Henry Fleming decided to enlist in the Army. On the eve of his first big battle, Henry fears what he will do when the bullets start to fly. Before the battle is over, Henry will have to decide for himself what it means to be a man.

From the work songs of the fields of people who were enduring the bonds of slavery, to ragtime, jazz, R&B, and the inspired spirituals of the Civil Rights movement, this play follows the compelling story of the role that music played in the history of Black Americans. Sponsored by the Furman Mathewson Trust of Edgecombe County Memorial Library.

The New York Theatre Ballet will make its eighth consecutive appearance in the Edgecombe Performance Series. NYTB has earned national acclaim for its restoration and revival of small masterworks by great choreographers and for its innovative hour-long ballets based on children鈥檚 literature. Sponsored by the Furman Mathewson Trust of Edgecombe County Memorial Library.

The Tarboro Choral Society is a non-profit organization formed in 2018 under the leadership of Dr. Nettie Jean Williams. Opera Returns to Tarboro will feature a choir of 40 singers with soloists and a 30-piece orchestra conducted by Dr. Williams. The program will include selections from Carmen, Madame Butterfly, Il Trovatore, and La Traviata among others.

Admission is free, but reserved seating tickets are required.

Edgecombe Performance Series go on sale September 23 and cost $45 for adults (save $5) and $25 for students (Pre-K through college). Season ticket holders are invited to attend two pre-show receptions on December 11 and March 19.
